This is the time of year to hunt hogs, and the hogs are everywhere her at Han Ranch near Victoria Texas. Last weekend a group of hunters out of Houston took 5 hogs. The biggest being a 240 pound sow. This is a picture of one of the two hogs I got last night. The last two times I've come down to the Haun Ranch for hog hunting, we've shot a hog within 1 hour of going into the field. This trip makes three. I arrived to the ranch around 8:30. It was already dark by the time I got out to my spot across the road. It was too dark to drive without headlights, as I usually do by the full moon. It was about 50% moon illumination, but overcast. I parked my Jeep in the opposite corner of the pasture and walked in from there. There was no sign of hogs at the hanging feeder. It didn't surprise me because I was arriving well after they would have gone off. There was no corn under it, though. Something must have eaten it already. On to the barrel feeder, which the hogs can push around to dispense corn 24/7. This is where I usually find them late at night. I got to within 75 yards of the barrel feeder, but I still could not detect any hogs. I did a 360-degree sweep with my night vision scope and much to my surprise, there was a large group of cattle in the middle of the field. They couldn't be more than 100 yards, but I could not see them at all with the naked eye. Then it started to pour. I was far enough from my Jeep that there wasn't much use in trying to seek shelter there. I figured I would just use my body and my hat to try to keep the rain off my night vision scope, to protect the delicate circuitry inside. Then it started to let up a little bit, and I worked my way closer to the feeder. I got to within 50 yards, when I thought I might have detected the slightest degree of movement. I could not see anything there without my scope. I put the scope to my eye, and my pulse quickened. I could see a hog at the feeder, plain as day. He was pushing the barrel around in a circle around the post it was tethered to. This rifle was so heavy that I needed to assume a steadier firing position. If only I had brought my "steady sticks". I went prone, but the grass was too tall for me to see. I thought to myself: Did I waste too much time? Is he still there? Has he detected me yet? I came back up to a sitting position. I could see him looking straight at me. I'm not sure if he heard me or if he saw my scope's illuminator, which looks like a dim red light. He ran around the feeder, but went back to feeding. I took the first steady shot I had available to me. PSSST! -- THWACK! I could hear the bullet hit flesh because with the suppressor (silencer) and the subsonic ammo, it sounds like a loud pellet gun. The sound of metal thumping on flesh was immediately followed by a horrific squeal as the hog flopped down. The bullet entered the near shoulder, passed through the chest cavity, and smashed the shoulder bone on the opposing side before stopping just under the hide. The bullet didn't expand at that low velocity, which allowed it to penetrate deeply. The hog bled out quickly. The round's ballistics are roughly comparable to a .45 ACP FMJ. Terry's wife was kind enough to take this nice picture late at night. I ate a sandwich, then headed back out again to the other part of the ranch. The back pasture was hard to recognize. The grass and sunflowers had grown very tall. I guess they haven't had any cattle back there lately. I cut out my headlights and drove the last several hundred yards by flashlight. With a hill separating the feeder from my Jeep, I figured the noise wouldn't disturb them. I shut off my engine and listened. I could already hear them. It sounded like they were on the feeder. I walked up to the blind which was about 50 yards from the feeder, but I could only make out a black thing motionless under the feeder post. There was tall grass and a depression that obscured my view. I thought it could be the barrel, so I move in closer. I would take a few steps, then peek through my NV scope. This time I saw a little piglet running around by the feeder. My heart rate jumped. Momma's near. I had to be sure that I took one clean shot and that I selected the Momma hog or there would be a price to pay. And there was nothing between me and them except about 15 yards worth of darkness and some weeds. I could not see them at all with the naked eye. My Jeep was on the other side of the barbed wire fence, and I couldn't figure out how to get into the blind in the dark. I couldn't be sure how many hogs there were in there, either. All of the sudden, they all scrambled away. I figured they must have caught wind of me or something, although it was calm. I was pretty close. I figured I had been compromised, so I started walking right up toward the feeder to see if there was any corn in it and size things up. I was just standing around at about 5 yards, when another small hog came back out for the feeder. I think he saw me and started moving away. He stopped for one more look, right before making it to freedom in the tall grass. He never made it. The bullet entered behind the right ear and exited behind the left ear. He dropped immediately. This one was a breeze to clean due to his small size, but it will be worth the effort when we dine on the tenderloin medallions.

7/6/04

Plenty of sunshine and hot temperatures should dry things up around here soon, making hog hunting easier. When the ground gets too hard to root and the grass gets dry and steamy, those hogs will be at the feeders and water holes.

6/17/04

Hog hunting has been great at Haun Ranch near Victoria Texas. Last weekend a group of 11 hunters took 5 hogs and missed 3 more. We saw hogs on all areas of the ranch. Yeah it`s hot, but if you can stand the heat the hogs are hear.

5/5/04

Congratulations to Matt Lopez. Matt currently has the National Wild Turkey Federation and L.S.B.A. spring Turkey Texas State record with his Gobbler (score 104.38) taken with a bow from Haun Ranch. We still have a few more days in Turkey season, until May 9th. I hear those Gobblers every morning from the house. I am seeing hogs nearly every day also. Make your reservations now.

2/10/04

Turkey season opens March 27th and runs till May 9th at Haun Ranch near Victoria Texas. We are seeing several flocks of 20 or more. Looks like a great season. Hog hunting is always great. Our guided hunts are running a 100% success rate in getting hunters an opportunity to take a hog.

Hunters are enjoying the comforts of the new lodge.

11/17/03

A deer hunter Sunday, took a high horned 8 pointer, after a larger 8 pointer managed to allude him. Saturday another hunter saw 14 deer, (does and a few small bucks), then ended the evening hunt with a 185 pound boar. Cooler weather is on the way. I am sure some cool weather will get the bigger bucks chasing does again. I have seen about 7 other 8 pointers in the past 2 weeks, while driving around the ranch. The hogs are everywhere. Come on out and take one home!

Haun Ranch is about 20 miles west of Victoria Texas

9/23/03
Dove season had a wet start this past weekend, but the hunters that did come out had some decent shooting with several bagging their limit. Hogs are loving the wet weather. They are rooting up the ground everywhere. Deer season is rapidly approaching. We are seeing some of the bucks starting to test each other by touching their antlers together will they are at the feeders. I still have hunting spots available for this years deer season.

7/1/03
Hunters are still bagging hogs at Haun Ranch. The last two groups were successful in taking good sized hogs. Last Sunday morning a hunter took a 175 pound field dressed boar.

05/04/03
Saturday`s Turkey hunter worked Gobblers all day. He said he had them figured out for Sunday, but got called back to work. He saw hogs at two different feeders about 8:00 in the morning. I heard four different gobblers this morning. I think I will try to call one up this afternoon. It`s getting pretty dry here on the ranch near Victoria. We are seeing more hogs and deer at the feeders. The drier it gets the more they need supplemental feed.

Let`s go Hunting! They`re out there!

2/21/03

Turkey has been great the first three weeks of the season, with almost everyone taking a gobbler. We have taken 16 long beards and one Jake. A hunter last week from Pennsylvania took a nice Gobbler with three beards. We still have 12 days of turkey season remaining with plenty of Gobblers to go around. I saw 5 long beards and heard a couple more will I was filling feeders this morning.

Hog hunting has been pretty good also. Three hunters took boars last week.

2/25/03

Hog hunting has been a little tougher past couple of weeks. The ranch is very wet and the winter grass is really growing. Hogs have plenty of grass to eat and soft ground to rut in. A group of 8 hunters this weekend had nice weather and had about 5 chances to take hogs, and did manage to bag about a 125 pound boar. Those hogs are about as lucky as they are smart.

Turkey season is fast upcoming, (March 29th). Most of the gobblers are still running in their bachelor flocks. I saw a flock of 13 good gobblers today. A few of the Old trophy Toms are starting to break away, getting ready for the strut. We saw three gobblers down by the creek with beards so long they were nearly stepping on them.

1/6/03

Whitetail deer season came to a close Sunday. We had six 8-pointers, one 10-pointer and one cull buck taken this year. Last Saturday a hog hunter saw two big bucks down by the creek. Many 4 and 6 pointers were seen during the season also. Thanks to all that came and hunted. I will start feeding protein this spring. Looks promising for next year.

Late dove season has been great in the mornings. This weekend is the last of dove season.

Spring Turkey season runs from March 29th till May 11th. We have an abundant supply of gobblers this year. The gobblers are all together now. We have seen as many as 20 good gobblers in one flock. Book your turkey hunt now, spaces are filling up.

A couple of hunters from Illinois had a great hog hunt Sunday night. We stalked to within 40 yards of several hogs feeding at a barrel feeder. What an adrienalin rush, getting that close to wild hogs in the night. Keith made a heart shot on a 180 pound sow.

11/04/02

Opening weekend of Whitetail Deer season at Haun Ranch was wet and wild. Despite rains all weekend, 4 hunters brought in two 8 pointers, a 220 pound hog, and a 10 pointer. Hunters saw as many as 4 bucks, 20 does, 20 hogs or half a dozen turkey, in a single sitting. The big 10 pointer was chaseing a doe. The rut is on. Several other good bucks were seen. I still have openings this season.

9/16/02

Dove season opens this Friday. Recent rains have put a damper on the bird population. I am sure they will be back with the first cool front. Dove weed and sunflowers are plentiful, assuring an abundant food source. Hog hunting is always super. I saw about 30 hogs under a feeder last week as I was refilling feeders.

8/27/02

Dove season is nearly here. We have been seeing a good population of Mourning doves along with a few White wings. Make your reservations now. First weekend is booked up.

8/14/02
Hog hunting is always fantastic at Haun Ranch near Victoria Texas. I have been seeing hogs during the day while driving around checking feeders. We have a good number of doves and I have seen several nice bucks still in velvet.

6/18/02
Back at Haun Ranch near Victoria a couple of Hog hunters had good success, takeing two pigs. They saw about 20 other hogs and many deer. Several bucks with promising antlers were also spotted.

5/23/02

I had a lot of fun Wednesday morning on Haun Ranch near Victoria Texas. I have been concerned that due to dry conditions, and the lack of cover during this fawn birthing, that coyotes might find the new born fawns easy prey. I went out at daybreak to try my luck at calling up a coyote. I crossed the creek and looked over the creek bank,to see hogs every where. I have plenty of pork in my freezer, so I stood behind a bush and watched the herd of hogs. There were at least 15 hogs between 75 and 250 pounds in the field. I watched them about 20 minutes until the morning started getting a little brighter. With the fast approaching daylight the hogs made their way to the brush. Hogs out of site,I made my way to the blind and set up my game caller. I played the cassette tape of a dying jackrabbit with no results. Still sure there were varmints in the area, I pulled out my hand call and blew out a few squeals. Instantly a big Doe almost ran over me, then snorted and turned away. A few seconds later a coyotes came running by with a doe hot on his heals. I had a rifle with a scope and was unable to get a shot at the streaking coyote. The coyote tried to come in again, but the deer were after him. I guess the deer thought the squeal of the rabbit call, were bleats from a fawn. Anyway I am a little less worried about the coyotes killing fawns. They may get a few, but they are going to have to work hard. That coyote looked a lot thinner than those fat does.

5/13/02
Back at the ranch near Victoria Texas, hog hunters saw and shot at some hogs. Once again the hogs lucked out with a near miss.
A turkey hunter took a nice Gobbler on the last day of the season. He said he saw some huge Gobblers but had little success coaking them in close enough to shoot

5/6/02

Hog hunting is hotter than ever. A couple of hunters Thursday saw about 30 hogs, selecting a nice 100 pounder for the pit. This is the last week of Turkey season. I am still seeing 5 to 10 Gobblers every time I drive through the ranch.

1/8/02

Now that deer season has come and gone, it`s time to get after the hogs and quail. All the grass is dead from recent cold weather, and the acorns are  gone. Most of the deer hunters nearby stop feeding corn after deer season. So there is nothing left for the hogs except the feeders on Haun Ranch. The hogs know where the feeders are, and they are really hitting them.

Last couple of weeks hunters took two big boars, 175 pounds and 185 pounds. Four other hogs were missed and one hog wounded.

We have more hogs than ever. Make your reservations now.

My German Shorthairs are hunting great. I have two quail hunts this weekend. If you are a quail hunter, we are ready to go

12/16/01

The last three weekends, the weather has been warm and rainy. Some people say game does not move in this kind of weather. However, a group of hunters this weekend proved that myth wrong.

There were 4 hunters here this weekend. They hunted most of the time, even though it rained all weekend.

They came in all excited after each hunt.

They had stories to tell.

"I saw 40 deer"

"I saw at least 25 deer. One small buck and one huge buck chasing those does. I shot at the big buck, but I missed him"

"I saw about 60 hogs, they were all around me, but would not hold still. I shot at them twice but missed. An 8 point buck came out of the brush about 30 yds. away, and I got him."

"I had does so close I could have hit them with a rock"

"I saw three hogs, but when I tried to shoot them they took off."

"We saw a nice 8 pointer while we were walking back to the truck, but before we could get our guns ready he bolted away."

"I bet I saw 75 turkey."

11/13/01

The first week of Deer season on Haun Ranch near Victoria Texas has been great. Hunters took two 6 pointers and a real nice 9 pointer. Bucks are running the does as the rut is on. Several other very nice bucks were seen, but managed to slip away.

The recent rain has got the hogs out rooting around also. I saw a big hog yesterday at 10:00 in the morning while I was putting out corn. There are still a few slots open for some great deer hunting

10/4/01

Dove hunting is slow at Haun Ranch near Victoria.

Hog & Deer are plentiful. Bow season has started. A bow hunter yesterday got shots at deer and hogs, but I guess he needs a little more practice.

HOG 9/4/01

Back at the ranch near Victoria we had 14 inches of rain last week. I bet those hogs are loving it. I saw about a dozen the other day, almost in my back yard.

HOG & DOVE REPORT 8/20/01

Back at the ranch near Victoria Texas, the hogs are really hitting the feeders and the corn field. A hunter last week said he heard are saw hogs all night long. He said he saw three different groups of hogs.

Another hog hunter told me he saw at least 75 different deer in one night.

The doves are here now in the corn and maze field, hope they stick around for dove season.

HOG & DOVE 8/6/01

Back at the ranch near Victoria Texas it`s hot and dry. If you can stand the heat the hogs are here.

Dove season is rapidly approaching. I have an abundant food supply for the birds. Look forward to a good dove season

HOG HUNTING 7/23/01

The story at Haun Ranch near Victoria Texas is lots of hogs. They are in the corn and maze field every night. Those hogs are really rooting around the ponds.

HOG HUNTING 7/16/0

Hog hunting at Haun Ranch near Victoria Texas is hot. Saturday evening a couple of hunters passed on a huge hog the saw in the creek. They were looking for a smaller pig. Those hogs have the corn field flat. The hotter and dryer the weather gets the more the hogs will rely on the feeders.

Hog Hunting 6/18/01

Hog hunting is hot at the Haun Ranch near Victoria Texas. A group of hunters took a couple of big hogs this weekend.

A 147 pound sow and a huge 285 pound boar. They said they saw several herds of 20 to 30 hogs going in and out of the corn patch. Those hogs are going crazy over that corn field.

Hog Hunting 6/13/01

Back at the ranch near Victoria Texas the hogs are really making a mess of the corn field. This morning my Mother said she saw a huge hog coming out of the corn

Hog Hunting   5/29/01

Back at the ranch near Victoria Texas, hog hunting is always hot. Most of the sows have 30 to 40 pound little pigs on them, so they are looking for an easy meal. They take full advantage of corn feeders and corn and maze fields. I have about 6 acres of corn and maze doing very well. I am sure the hogs are going to be into the fields.

HOG HUNTING    5/21/01

A couple of hunters from Louisiana, winners of the free hog hunt drawing, had good success hog hunting saturday. They said they must have seen a hundred hogs. They bagged a 100 pounder.

Let`s go hunting or fishing!

HOG HUNTING    5/8/01

Hunters last week took several nice hogs. One hunter from Houston took a big 200 pound boar. The boar came out at sundown. After the hog chased the deer away, hunter Bob took him out.

Friday while I was showing a couple of turkey hunters around, we drove up on a herd of hogs about 400 yards away. We did not have a gun along. I took the hunters back to their truck. They drove back out to where we saw the hogs, and staulked close enough to shoot 2 sows weighing 160 pounds and 130 pounds. They said there were several much larger, and there must have been about 50 hogs in all.

The hog population continues to grow.

HOG & TURKEY--4/17/01

Hog hunters this week had good success this week, taking a 100 # sow, 3 sows about 50 #, and a small boar about 50 #.

We had 1 Turkey hunter this weekend. He took a nice gobbler. The bird weighed 20 #, and had a beard almost 10 inchs long.

The hunter from Houston said he saw and heard many gobblers. He assured me there were several gobblers much larger than the one he shot.

Hog & Turkey Hunting--2/28/01

Hogs are hitting the feeders pretty good. Most of the hogs taken recently are around 200 pounds and very fat. The sows should be haveing pigs soon, which will increase activity at the feeders.Turkey season is coming up soon, (March 31st). We have been seeing several large flocks of about 20 birds. We are starting to hear the Gobblers, but they have`nt split up yet. There are some great Toms out there. Several with 10 inch plus beards.

HUNTING REPORT--1/9/01

Sorry it`s been such a long time since last report. I got a little lazy through the holidays. I hope the holidays were good to you.

Deer season is finished at Haun Ranch near Victoria Texas, but do`nt put your guns yet. Turkey season will be here soon (March 31), and the hog hunting is always great.

I had a fun group of hog hunters out last weekend. Those guys knew how to have a good time. They saw lots of hogs, and did out-smart one hog. Not bad for the first time hog hunting at night. Here is what the hunter had to say.

My name is Seabron Wilson I was the one that killed the 135 LB Hog on Friday night 01/05/2001. I would like to know if you could email me a copy of the photos so I can show off to all my friends. It was my first big kill and I am pleased with the hunt and would like to say you have a class “A” setup. I am looking forward to more hunts at the Haun Ranch.

I couldn`t see how many points because he was going away from me, but he sure was beautiful. I am seeing a good many doves also.

We had a couple of good offshore trips this weekend, about 20 miles in the gulf, out of Port O`Connor, Tx. We found some nice snapper up to 10 pounds, and some big Kings. We caught two, 35 pound Kings yesterday. I think the wind is finally going to let up. The fishing should be great.
Back at the ranch near Victoria, Tx. The hogs are everywhere. I saw 6 big hogs and about 15 pigs at 2:00 in the afternoon thursday. I also saw a couple of bucks in velvet. One buck had antlers about an inch ouitside his ears. That`s about an 18 inch spread. We have had good rains, and the game is in great shape.

Let`s go hunting.

Hog hunting Posted Friday, May 26, 2000 - 16:31

Hog hunting is good on Haun Ranch near Victoria. The last 6 groups were successful. I know it`s hot, but I do have access to a walk-in cooler.
Let`s go hunting,
Thanks, Terry Haun 888-990-6460
